Gary Anderson of the University of Manitoba and Christopher A. Loretz of the University of Buffalo have edited and commented on the manuscript. We appreciate the technical assistance provided by Kiyomi Imamura, Terumi Horiuchi and Makiko Tosaka of the Laboratory of Functional Genomics, the University of Tokyo. The super computer resource was provided by National Institute of Genetics (NIG), Research Organization of Information and Systems (ROIS).

Funding

This work is supported by JSPS Grant-in-Aid 16K18575 awarded to MW, Scientific Research on Innovation Areas “Genome Science” (221S0002) from Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology of Japan awarded to YT and WI, and JSPS Grant-in-Aid 23,247,010 and 23,710,231 from Japan Society for the Promotion of Science awarded to YT and WI respectively. MW and WI were supported by Centers of Research Excellence in Science and Technology (CREST) of the Japanese Science and Technology Agency awarded to Kazuhiro Kogure of the University of Tokyo. The funding bodies were not involved in the design of study and collection, analysis, and interpretation of data.

Availability of data and materials

Transcriptome data of intestine and gill in eels are available in DDBJ database with accession number DRA004257 and DRA004258 respectively.

Authors’ contributions

MW wrote the manuscript, maintained fish stock, performed real time PCR, measurement of ions, HPLC purification, and data analyses. TT and SP performed histology and TT analyzed the histology data. MW and NO performed the EPMA analysis. HO and WI analyzed sequencing data, performed mapping, assembled eel transcriptome, and analyzed expression data. YS performed the RNA sequencing. YT coordinated the project. All authors read, edited, and approved the final manuscript.

Ethics approval

The animal study was performed according to the Guideline for Care and Use of Animals approved by the Animal Experiment Committee of the University of Tokyo.

Additional file 1: Table S2. Summary of expression of known epithelial growth factors that regulates goblet cells (Noah et al., 2011;[ 33 ]) during the early seawater transfer (1h – 3h) in gill, anterior and posterior intestine of eels. Gene expression was determined by quantitative RNA-seq. Gene expressions were compared between time-dependent FW-FW and FW-SW transfer. Arrows indicate the insignificant change, upregulation (magenta) and downregulation (green). Statistical significance is indicated by *(<0.05), **(<0.01), and *** (<0.001) after two-way ANOVA, Bonferroni’s test. low expression (average less than 50 reads/million), no detectable expression. 'Certificate of Apprenticeship or Certificate of Qualification' also includes Journeyperson's designations.

'Earned doctorate' refers to persons who have completed a doctorate degree awarded by a university. This includes, for example, Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) and Doctor of Juridical Science (S.J.D.). It does not include honorary doctorates.

'Field of study' refers to the discipline or area of learning/training associated with a particular course or programme of study.

This variable refers to the predominant discipline or area of learning or training of a person's highest completed postsecondary certificate, diploma or degree, classified according to the Classification of Instructional Programs (CIP) Canada 2016.

This 'Major field of study' variable can be used either independently or in conjunction with the 'Highest certificate, diploma or degree' variable. When the latter is used with 'Major field of study,' it should be noted that different fields of study will be more common for different types of postsecondary qualifications. At the detailed program level, some programs are only offered by certain types of institutions.

There was an explicit instruction in the questionnaire which instructed respondents to be as specific as possible in indicating a subfield or subcategory of specialization within a broad discipline or area of training.

This variable shows the 'Variant of CIP 2016 - Alternative primary groupings' CIP variant, with the hierarchy of the primary groupings and two-digit series. When a primary grouping contains more than one subseries from series '30. Multidisciplinary/interdisciplinary studies,' these subseries are grouped together. An exception is made for '30.01 Biological and physical sciences' due to its large size. For more information on the CIP classification, see the Alpina White Leather Flat Roman Style Sandal White KNcLcm6
.

For information on collection, classification and data quality for this variable, refer to the Education Reference Guide, Census of Population, 2016 , Catalogue no. 98-500-X2016013.

Certain series and their subcomponents are not used when coding major field of study for the census. These are series 21, 32 to 37 and 53, which represent non-credit and personal improvement fields of study.

'No postsecondary certificate, diploma or degree' includes persons who have not completed an apprenticeship or trades certificate or diploma; a college, CEGEP or other non-university certificate or diploma; or a university certificate, diploma or degree.
